Have you ever been to a meeting, event, or retreat where the “icebreaker” missed the mark?
Maybe you’ve experienced icebreakers that were actually as cold as ICE and did the opposite of their intention, which is to warm up the room and build community.

Well, I’m writing this because I think we need to have an intentional conversation about what a good “icebreaker” is.
I care deeply about community-builders and think they should all provide warmth, inclusion, AND deep and meaningful connections.
Typically, “icebreakers” are experienced at the beginning of a meeting, and since this sets the tone, the activity offered can make or break the experience.
As a facilitator, leadership coach, and educator, I believe that community-builders have a direct impact on the team’s experience (I prefer to call them community builders because I’ve had my fair-share of negative experiences with awkward ice-breakers)…
And let’s face it: time is the most precious resource, so when leaders choose community-builders that don’t maximize the moment, that feel disconnected from the flow of the meeting, or that feel inauthentic or insincere–it’s frustrating and can even be off-putting.
So, since the leader/facilitator is responsible for selecting a community-builder that is connected to the
work of the team, I have BOTH a solution AND some tips for you.
I’ll start with some quick tips for your community-building needs, aligned with the S.P.A.R.K. acronym:
S – Show authenticity. Choose a community-builder you feel good about and that allows you to stand in your strengths
P – Pay attention to the non-verbal signals in the room to gauge engagement
A – Ask questions about people’s experience and solicit feedback at the end
R – Respect diversity and make sure the community-builder honors multiple perspectives
K – Kindly expect some tension. If you really want your activity to be relevant, create space for ambiguity
